Swordsmen
The tough defender among the infantry: twice as strong and twice as expensive as a spearman – yet still content with a single settler.

Swordsmen are pure defenders. They hold the line where Light infantry alone is no longer enough, and they provide twice as much defence per settler. They are of little use in attacks: their attack value is modest, their carrying capacity small, and they march more slowly than spearmen, axemen and archers.
Strengths and weaknesses
- + Good defence for few settlers – important as soon as space in your Living quarters gets tight.
- – Little carrying capacity and slow: out of place in attacks and plunder raids.
Put swordsmen into your defence together with spearmen and Archers. On wild animal hunts they may only join against wolves. Against dragons they achieve something against the Shadow-Keeper and Zmei Gorynytsch, but nothing against the Wawel-Dragon or the Glowtail.
Weapon research in the laboratory
| Stage | Research | Bonus per stage | Stone | Wood | Ore | Research time | Requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bronze sword | +4 attack, +6 defence | 1,080 | 1,056 | 1,296 | 10 min 30 s | Barracks 2 Laboratory 1 |

Each stage is researched once per castle and adds its bonus to every unit of this type in that castle. Choose your laboratory level and world above and the research times adjust.
