Settlers are the inhabitants of your castle. How many of them fit in is decided by the Living quarters: every level adds sleeping places for more settlers. The values per level are on the building page. Every castle has its own settlers – you can't move them between castles.
What needs settlers
- Buildings – every building level employs settlers. The “Settlers” column in the level tables of the buildings shows how many.
- Troops – every unit needs settlers (column “Settlers per unit” on the troop pages). They count as soon as the unit is in the queue, and also while it is on the march.
- Construction wagons – a construction wagon on its way takes settlers with it until it arrives.
Once no settlers are left, you can neither build nor recruit in that castle. When you relocate troops, the receiving castle also needs enough free settlers.
Wild animals as troublemakers
If a pack of wild animals raids your castle, it has fewer inhabitants for a few days – plus lower production and a smaller queue. Under Military > Wild Animals and in the left bar you can see how long the penalty lasts.
